Ans. Agriculture means growing of crops, raising of livestock and running the industries based on agriculture.

 

Q 2. Which factors affect the agriculture?

Ans. Climate, relief, soil, irrigation facilities, methods of agriculture, market facilities, means of transport, banks etc.

 

Q 3. Write the name of the cereal crops.

Ans. Rice, wheat, maize, jowar, bajra, pulses, oil seeds etc.

 

Q 4. What is puddling?

Ans. The field in which the rice is to be planted, is prepared by ploughing, filling with water and levelling. This whole process is known as puddling.

Ans. Glucose, starch, alcohol and vegetable oils are prepared from maize.

Ans. China, India, Bangladesh and Japan largely grow rice. China is at first place by producing 36% of total world rice.

In India West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu etc. states are very popular for growing rice.

Ans. Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur and Sangrur are important cotton producing areas in Punjab. BT cotton seed variety of cotton is giving good results. Cotton is known as 'White gold' in Malwa region of Punjab.

 

 

 

 


Q 13. Write about protection of tea and coffee plants.

Ans. Tea: - Tea plants are planted on the cleared slopes. Fertilizers are used for the proper development of plants. The rain water should not stand in the roots of the plants. Tea plant needs pruning for its proper growth.

Coffee: - Coffee saplings are grown in a nursery. Once planted, these plants continue to bear fruit for 30 years. The coffee plants require fertilisers, pruning and irrigation from time to time.

 

Q 14. Write a note on the uses of machines in agriculture operations in USA.

Ans. The average farm size in USA is 700 acres. About 3% of the total population of USA is engaged in agriculture. In a farm, only one type of crop is cultivated. From the sowing of crop to the taking of the crop to markets, every work is done with the help of machines. Helicopters and aeroplanes are also used for agricultural activities.
