Q 1. Who was the first Portuguese to reach India?

Ans. Vasco-De-Gama, a Portuguese captain, reached Calicut in India on 27th May 1498.

Ans. The first Carnatic war was fought between the Britishers and the French in 1746-48 A.D. The British got the victory in this war.


Q 6. When and among whom the battle of Plassey was fought?

Ans. The battle of Plassey was fought between Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and the Britishers in 23rd June 1757 A.D.

Q7. When and among whom the battle of Buxar was fought?

Ans. The battle of Buxar was fought among the Britishers and the joint armies of Mir Qasim, Siraj-ud-Daulah and Shah Alam-II in 23rdoctober 1764A.D.

Q 8. Write down a note on the battle of Plassey.

Ans. The battle of Plassey was fought between Siraj-ud-Daulah and the British forces of Robert Clive in 23rd June 1757A.D. Mir Jafar and Rai Durlabh who were the commanders of Nawab's army, did not participate in the battle because they formed an alliance to favour the Britishers. The Nawab was defeated and Britishers made him prisoner. Later on he was killed.

Q 9. Write down a note on ‘Dual system’ in Bengal.

Ans. After the victories of Plassey and Buxar the East India Company became the real ruler of Bengal. Military and Finance Department came under its control. Nawab was given the responsibility to run the civil administration. It is called dual administration system.


Q10. Write a note on ‘Policy of Lapse’.

Ans. Lord Dalhousie adopted the ‘Doctrine of Lapse’ to annex the Indian states to the British Empire. According to this policy, those ruler who had no son, they were not allowed to adopt one. After the death of such a ruler, his state was merged with the British Empire. According to this policy, Lord Dalhousie annexed Satara, Sambhalpur, Udaipur and Jhansi etc. in the British Empire.
